Success with hearing aids depends on several factors, including how early the hearing loss is treated, how motivated a person is to improve their hearing, and how well the hearing aids are fitted.
One of the best ways to make sure your hearing aids are fitted properly is through a process called Real Ear Measures (REMs). REMs allow us to measure how sound is actually delivered into your ears while you're wearing the hearing aids, taking into account your unique hearing loss and ear shape. This helps us adjust the devices so they’re doing exactly what they need to.
Unfortunately, most places that fit hearing aids — including audiologists — skip this important step. In fact, research shows that 70–80% of providers don’t use REMs.
